Is Apple Inc going to produce the icar or just the software to drive them. The rumours that apple is building a self-driving car systems have been given credence after the tech giant was granted a permit to test autonomous vehicles in California.
The California DMV’s website now lists Apple Inc as have the permission to test autonomous vehicles. There have long been rumours that Apple have in development the technology under project titan, but this was reportedly put on the shelf last year. The latest developments are a strong indication that we may see the icar.
Weather it is just the system to drive the car or their own car it is definite that Apple Inc are up to something. Further to the rumours Apples Inc director for products, Steve Kenner, wrote a letter in November urging government regulators not to put too many restrictions on autonomous cars.
“The company is investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation,” Kenner wrote at the time.
We would expect apple to either buy another company in the automotive field, Robert Bosch GmbH, or try and develope their own brand. Given Apple’s mass market direction we would expect it not to buy a niche market company like koenigsegg but look to get into a wide area company that is struggling with cash flow.
Given the current state of the likes of Ford and GM they maybe ripe for takeover and Apple Inc does have access to the sort of cash that would be required.
