Honda’s new 2017 Type R Sets a record around the Nürburgring

Like most sports car manufacturers a trip to the Nürburgring is compulsory to find out whether it cuts the mustard. Honda recently put its new 2017 Type R round its corners with great results. The Civic Type R managed to get around in just 7 minutes and 43.8 seconds which not only beats the its rival the Volkswagen Golf GTI Club Sport S time of 7 minute 49.21 but it also regains its title of fastest two-wheel drive car round the Nürburgring.

According to Honda the lap time was achieved on a dry track with outside temperature being conducive to help the car get its best time. Although it should be noted the car was not stock and had a few tweaks to get the best out of its a 2.0-liter turbo VTEC four with 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, engine.

The standard gearbox was swapped for a six-speed manual with lower gear ratios focusing the car on acceleration not top end. The exterior of the Honda Type R was fitted with an aerodynamic package, which gave it the extra downforce required.

This car in its standard guise is truly one of the best ways to spend around £30,000 if speed is what you are looking for and you can put up with its boy racer looks. Honda expects the car to sell in large numbers and we see no reason why it would not.
