BMW, Mercedes and Audi have long been seen as similar brands with cars like M3, C63 AMG and Audis RS series, but there is one difference Mercedes and Audi have a few high-end cars. The likes of SLS and SLR from their AMG division and Audi’s R8 are not being replicated by BMW.
Well In an interview BMW M’s vice-president of sales and marketing, Peter Quintus gave the biggest hint that one is imminent. He did say “that no firm plans were in the works” but there have been several talks about the option of it.
I know that there is the i8 electric hybrid but the uptake seems to be very slow and it is not getting the same press as say the R8. From the interview, he did hint that if, and he is not confirming that, a new car was in development it would be a hybrid style supercar and we know from the likes of the McLaren P1 that could be very cool. He also stated that a concept car already exits so watch this space.
Peter Quintus went on to say that “The two big factors beyond that are our development capacity and also the investment required.” And “We would love to do it. Our engineers would love to do it. But there has to be the money to do it,”. If, however, BMW did take the step, Quintus is convinced that the next M supercar would feature some type of alternative driveline technology. “Would it involve hybrid technology? Yes, you couldn’t stay with a conventional approach. “It should be at least a plug-in (electric).
So BMW get on and do it…
